In 1911 when she was fifty Lou attended the third annual Psychoanalytic Conference as the guest of her lover, Paul Bjerre, a Swedish psychiatrist and Nietzsche scholar who had written a book about Nietzsche’s madness (The Genial Madness). The Freud group knew about Nietzsche syphilis then, as revealed in the two 1905 Wednesday evenings of the discussion about Nietzsche’s posthumously published Ecce Homo.

1911 was a year of congeniality in the Freud group. In this picture Freud appears to be taller than Jung, although he was 5’6” and Jung was 6’2” which illustrates the chain of command then: Freud was standing on a box and Jung was stooping.

Lou was known to have been Nietzsche’s friend and confidant in 1882.
